The Zwolle gynecologist Jan Wildschut fathered at least 17 children in the eighties with his own sperm donations. Parents knew nothing about it.
The meanwhile deceased Zwolle gynecologist Jan Wildschut conceived at least seventeen children with his own sperm during inseminations between 1981 and 1993, without the parents being aware of this. Wildschut’s former employer, the Isala hospital (at the time Sophia Hospital Zwolle) brings this out on Tuesday via their website.
The doctor was involved in Artificial Insemination Donor Sperm (KID) in the Zwolle hospital from 1981 to 1993. That reports that Wildschut’s personal sperm donations came to light through matches in DNA databases, supplemented with a DNA test by one of the legal children of the gynecologist.
The reason for the investigation arose at the end of 2019, when the parents of one of the donor children approached the hospital. Shortly afterwards, the hospital informed the health inspectorate about the case.
According to the Isala hospital, the legitimate children of Wildschut, the seventeen known donor children and the hospital itself now wanted to come out together with the information. This is because “every child has the right to know who his biological parents are.” In addition, they want to prevent children from relationships of half-siblings, who do not know that they have the same biological father, from developing birth defects.
It is unknown whether there are any more donor children of the gynecologist. The Isala Hospital is calling on people with “questions about their own identity” to contact us following the announcement.
