Utrecht sewage treatment plant is taking measures because of bad smells

The stench around the sewage treatment plant on Brailledreef in Utrecht’s Overvecht district may soon be a thing of the past. This is because odor-limiting measures have been taken.

With the new measures, the De Stichtse Rijnlanden Water Board tries to “substantially reduce” the smell. The measures will be applied in November.

The stench is caused by the sludge that is processed by the installation. This contains two substances that, according to the water board, contain a lot of odor. The lava filter of the sewage treatment plant does not remove these substances properly.

There is discussion about the fragrance standard. The province of Utrecht has determined that the installation in Overvecht does not remain within the agreed odor emission. However, the water board interprets these odor standards differently. The province has therefore asked the state attorney to open an investigation.

“As soon as the state attorney has indicated which odor standards apply, the De Stichtse Rijnlanden Water Board will be asked to indicate how and within what period the sewage treatment plant can meet these odor standards.”

In the meantime, reports about the odor nuisance keep coming in. It has been agreed that the water board will receive these reports itself. This would be necessary for an adequate detection of the cause of the stench.

It is expected that in April 2021 there will be an extra odor treatment installation that will combat the smell.
