Traveling to Curaçao is not recommended due to the increasing number of infections

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is tightening travel advice for Curaçao to color code ‘orange’ due to the increase in the number of new infections on the island. The ministry advises traveling to the island only if necessary.

People who are currently on Curaçao do not have to return immediately, according to the ministry. However, it is requested to go into home quarantine for ten days upon arrival.

After Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s press conference in early November, there was a run on holidays to Curaçao. Rutte then gave the “urgent” advice not to travel abroad until mid-January, but also said that the Dutch can still travel to Curaçao and Bonaire. Code yellow still applies to Bonaire.

Curaçao has seen the number of new infections increase sharply in the last few weeks. An emergency law has now been passed, so that violators of the corona measures can be fined. That was not possible before. In Curaçao, among other things, a curfew applies.

The introduction of the emergency law had been on the agenda for six months, but was delayed by protests from the opposition. Ultimately, the law was passed in a considerably amended form. According to Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath, the government “needs the tools of the emergency law to fight the corona crisis.”
