The most important news in five minutes from Tuesday 3 November

Good evening. To keep you up to date, we have summarized the five most important news topics of this Tuesday. One article, five minutes. If you read this, you will be informed again.

1/5 | Trump and Biden close their campaigns: it is now up to the voter

Tonight the United States will elect a new president. Due to the American electoral system, the outcome is probably determined by a small number of swing states. Florida, Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Georgia – de Volkskrant lists the expected results and when these results can be expected.

On Monday, the two American presidential candidates concluded their campaigns. President Donald Trump held five meetings in four different states, warning of a “Biden lockdown” if his competitor wins the election. Joe Biden limited himself to just two meetings, in which he said he wanted to end the division in the country: “I promise you that I will work just as hard for those who do not support me. That is the job of an American president. ”

The communication channels Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube fear a turbulent night and are armed against the spread of incorrect information.

2/5 | Pilots then agree with KLM about a longer pay cut

The Association of Dutch Airline Pilots, also known as the “pilots union”, was the last union to agree to a wage sacrifice for the duration of the emergency loan to KLM that the cabinet is prepared to provide. The airline reports this today. In this way, KLM can still call on the rest of the government support of more than 3 billion euros to get through the corona crisis.

Earlier today, the FNV union also agreed to the condition of Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Finance that the wage moderation would last until 2025, the year in which government support to KLM ends.

3/5 | The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) falls short in its tasks due to understaffing

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is so understaffed that it falls short in two thirds of its tasks. The consequence: risks to public health, animal welfare and the environment. This is evident from a study by Deloitte into the functioning of the government agency that supervises food and product safety in the Netherlands.

The capacity shortage is especially visible when checking non-edible products. For example, the NVWA succeeds in checking only 1 percent of the 275 thousand “surveillance locations” in this domain. As a result, unsafe products can enter the market.

4/5 | Trends continue: the number of corona infections continues to fall, the number of hospital admissions continues to rise

For the fourth day in a row, the number of new corona infections has decreased. Today the RIVM reports 7,776 new infections, the lowest number in three weeks. In the past week – for the first time in two months – there were fewer new reports from people who tested positive than in the week before.

The number of covid patients in the hospital has again risen sharply. There are now 2,653 patients in hospital because of corona. That is 108 more than on Monday afternoon. There are now 609 covid patients in intensive care, 22 more than yesterday. Mortality rates also increased: 113 deaths were reported today.

Museums, stages and libraries today proposed to allow only public from the region to be admitted to prevent travel movements. With the proposal, the sector is responding to rumors that the cabinet will announce at tonight’s press conference that all cultural institutions must close their doors again.

5/5 | Municipalities must house a significantly higher number of asylum seekers next year

As a result of getting rid of overdue asylum applications, it is expected that 27 thousand asylum seekers with a residence permit will have to be allocated a home next year. This is compared to 12 thousand this 2020. A special task force, on behalf of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, wants to process 14 thousand applications before the end of this year. All these status holders are entitled to a home.

This will be a difficult task for municipalities: the housing market is already tight. Moreover, the priority regulation for status holders for social rental homes often causes social unrest. According to State Secretary Ankie Broekers-Knol of Justice and Security, municipalities can also accommodate status holders in renovated office buildings, flexible homes or rented rooms.
