Two supervisors were assaulted and detained against their will in the night from Saturday to Sunday when they checked a café in Medemblik, North Holland, for compliance with the corona measures. The police have arrested the manager of the cafe.

Shortly after midnight, the inspectors entered the building on the Kaasmarkt, where they saw that there was not enough distance. Moreover, people smoked in the café, while a smoking ban has been in force in the catering industry for years.

The owner of the cafe entered into a discussion with the regulators. “This turned into a situation where the inspectors were threatened with death and assaulted. They were also held in the cafe against their will,” police said.

In addition, visitors to the cafe took their phones from the inspectors and deleted the photos taken that evening. One of the supervisors was slightly injured in the incident.

The inspectors eventually managed to free themselves and called in the police. The manager of the cafe, who was under the influence of alcohol, was arrested.

According to the police, the municipality is preparing for administrative action against the café.
