The streaming service HBO Max will also offer films in Europe in the second half of 2021 that are still running in the cinema. But HBO cannot yet say when the service will start in the Netherlands.
HBO Max boss Andy Forssell announced the plans during a presentation at Web Summit. The European rollout of HBO Max will start in the second half of the year, after which the streaming service should be available in many European countries by the end of 2021.
According to Forssell, all customers with a regular HBO subscription will then have access to HBO Max, where more films and series can be seen. In addition to Europe, it is also Latin America’s turn during the same period.
Immediately online at cinema premiere
HBO owner Warner announced plans on Thursday to also immediately stream all of his cinema films online via HBO Max. It means films like Dune, The Matrix 4 and Suicide Squad can be seen on the service right after their cinema debut.

However, it remains to be seen whether that HBO Max deal will also apply in European countries. Distribution rights here differ from those in the United States, which means that separate agreements must be made. The CEO does not say exactly which countries will be next year’s turn.
The series and films of HBO are currently only available in the Netherlands for VodafoneZiggo customers. The provider has not yet shared any plans for HBO Max.
The Dutch branch of Warner also cannot say when HBO Max will come to the Netherlands.
Cinemas
Cinema operator Pathé does not want to respond to the plans. The Dutch Association of Cinemas and Film Theaters (NVBF) is keeping a low profile. “As long as there are talks going on, we will not react in the media or anticipate matters”, NVBF director Gulian Nolthenius told the ANP.
Dutch cinemas are ultimately dependent on decisions made by the major Hollywood parties. Earlier this year, Universal and Disney, among others, decided to release major movie titles directly on streaming services.
