Corrosion and wear were among other reasons that a cable from the tram portal on the Erasmus Bridge broke in September. The municipality of Rotterdam confirms this to NU.nl on Friday.
Rust and wear are one of several factors that caused the cable break. During the inspections of the cables on the bridge, only the visible part is checked, but the damage was on the invisible part. From now on, these types of cables will be fully inspected, the municipality assures.
The cable that broke was the cable that had to pull counterweight to lift the tram portal when the bridge opens. This happened on Monday, September 14, after which the bridge could not be used for several days.
The municipality also reports that the tram portal was replaced last week. Some residual work will be carried out on Monday and Tuesday, but traffic should not experience any inconvenience.
