RIVM reports 6,577 new positive tests, again more than average (5,341)

In the past 24 hours, 6,577 new positive tests have been reported to RIVM. That is over 1,200 more than the average of the past seven days (5,341). On Saturday, the RIVM also reported 39 new deaths. On Friday there were 58.

NU.nl looks at the average figure of the seven previous days in order to paint a better picture of the corona infections in the Netherlands.

It is the fourth day in a row that the number of new positive tests is above the average of the previous seven days. However, more and more tests are being carried out.

Compared to the total number of tests taken, the share of positive results (11 percent) decreases three consecutive weeks, as was shown during the weekly update of the RIVM last Tuesday. That was good news, but since then there has been an increasing number of infections on a daily basis.

Next Tuesday, the institute will also announce how many tests have been conducted this week. Last week there were 258,878, slightly more than a week earlier (254,341). If more people get tested, it makes sense that there are automatically more positive test results. The cabinet does want the number of positive tests to decrease before, for example, the catering industry can open again.

About the same number of COVID-19 patients on ic

The number of corona patients in intensive care fell by one on Saturday, according to figures from the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS). In total, there are now 472 corona patients on the ICs.

In addition, there are 516 patients without COVID-19 on the ICs, 34 fewer than the day before. The total IC occupancy is now 988, 35 less than the day before.

Number of corona patients in hospital decreases, 220 new admissions

There are a total of 1,602 corona patients in the hospital, 23 fewer than the day before. 1,130 of them are out of intensive care, 22 less than Friday.

In the past 24 hours, 220 people with the coronavirus were admitted, 189 of whom were in a nursing unit and 31 in an intensive care unit.

Since the outbreak began last spring, 9,662 people in the Netherlands have been infected with the corona virus and have died from its effects.

Celebrate Sinterklaas in a small circle

Next Tuesday, the cabinet will make a final decision about how the Netherlands can celebrate the holidays during the corona pandemic. The government’s main advisory group, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), believes the figures are not yet good enough to recommend a relaxation for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) already said in November that he expects the current measures to remain in force at least until mid-January. Next Monday, the OMT will issue new advice for December, among others, based on the current figures. The cabinet usually follows this advice.

In any case, the Sinterklaas party should be celebrated modestly. The cabinet has not announced any relaxation measures. It is advisable to receive no more than three people at home (children up to the age of twelve are excluded) and to celebrate the party with your own family or in a small circle.
