RIVM: 20 percent of people who tested positive go out anyway

Of all people who tested positive for the corona virus, 20 percent went outside as usual. That says virologist Aura Timen of the RIVM.

“These positively tested people went to work, for example, or took their children to school,” says Timen. When asked whether the measures that were taken actually work, she says: “The measures were very effective in the spring, we know they work. But we see that the follow-up of the measures is not optimal.”

With complaints to the outside

Because in addition to the 20 percent who go out with a positive test, Timen indicates that 70 percent of the people who have complaints simply go outside. As a result, the virus is now spreading rapidly among the population, she says.

The percentage of positive tests is also higher than ever. “Out of every 100 people, 14 are tested positive,” says Timen. In comparison, 1 in 100 people tested positive at the beginning of June.

Young people see each other in the hospitality industry

Most of the people who test positive are young people. At the press conference scheduled for tonight, a complete closure of the hospitality industry will most likely be announced. Why? People should meet each other less often, and young people often meet each other in the hospitality industry, says Timen. “We also see that employees in the catering industry test positive more and more. This means that extra risks are run in that setting.”

Why there are more infections in poor neighborhoods:

As far as Timen is concerned, the schools do not have to be closed, because the increase in positive infections is less intensive than in the age category above.
