Pathé has decided to no longer shoot films that feature Black Petes. The cinema chain announced this on Instagram on Wednesday.
From now on Pathé will only broadcast films in which, for example, soot-wiping or rainbow petes can be seen. Old or new films with black people in them are no longer shown.
The cinema chain says: “We do not want anyone to feel discriminated against by the films that we screen.”
Pathé also responds on Instagram to an incident that took place last Saturday, according to the cinema chain. “Following a number of racist comments under a trailer on Saturday: we do not tolerate racism,” said Pathé. It is not clear which trailer it is.
Pathé Thuis, the streaming service of the cinema chain, informs NU.nl that it applies the same policy. “In the past period, the priority was to take Sinterklaas films offline that are not appropriate,” said a spokesman. The streaming service will also see which films without a Sinterklaast theme contain Black Petes and remove them.
