Radio DJ Giel Beelen has some difficulty getting to his own radio show on NPO Radio 2 on time. He did not show up last night, and last Friday it was hit because he overslept. How can you ensure that you don’t oversleep, especially now that winter has just started?

Last Friday, Giel arrived one and a half hours late for his program, which is broadcast between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., because he had overslept. And today he didn’t even show up at all. BNNVARA says that the sleepover today was caused by a broken phone.
In a video on Twitter, Giel says that he was busy until late last night and may have underestimated the early time of his show. “I’m going to buy an alarm clock”, the DJ promises.
Never overslept
It is not easy to get up so early, says presenter of the breakfast news Jan de Hoop. He has to get up early for years. “It is still a drama to get up early. It is terrible,” he says. His alarm goes off at 3:45 am, and then he gets into the car at 4:15 am to go to work.
Still, he says he has never overslept in 31 years. “I only came too late once when there was a tree on the road on the A12. Then I was taken by the police to Hilversum, I came in 1 minute to 7 and I immediately started presenting”, says De Hoop.
To bed at 10 am
It is not easy for him. “Getting up is awful. Once I’m up, I’m a morning person. I have to be really sharp, so I can’t sit sleepily at the computer.” A cup of coffee helps him with this, but only when he is at the office. He also has a fixed time when he goes to bed. “I always go to bed at 10, so I sleep about six hours.”
According to sleep coach Susanne Willekes, the entrance of wintertime may also have had an influence on Giel. “The transition to winter time is a bit more difficult for most people than the other way around. What it may have been is that Giel went to bed at the same time in the past few days as in summer time. But because the clock has been changed, it is then actually an hour later ā, she says. “So you better go to bed an hour earlier.”
Outwards
So go to bed on time. But going out early in the morning can also help. “It is best to go out in the morning so that you have a natural bedtime in the evening. Then you get tired of yourself earlier.”
Some people also suffer from a shift in rhythm more than others. “It is best to shift your rhythm by fifteen minutes a day, then you get used to it the best.”
