Tuur Elzinga, the current vice-president of the FNV union, is running for the chairmanship of the union. Elzinga announced this on Friday. Han Busker, who currently heads the largest trade union in the Netherlands, announced in mid-September that he was quitting as chairman after one term. All candidates must be known by next week. The members can then elect a new chairman early next year. Fifty-year-old Elzinga has negotiated the new pension system on behalf of the FNV, about which agreement was reached last summer after years of bickering. In his ‘election program’ for the presidency of the union, Elzinga argues for a minimum wage of 14 euros for everyone from the age of eighteen.
