AMS-IX, the internet exchange in Amsterdam, processed more than 9 terabits per second (Tbps) for the first time on Sunday evening. That is considerable growth: at the end of last year the peak traffic at the junction was still 7 Tbps.
9 Tbps is an enormous amount of data. Converted to 496 hours of HD video that flashes through the node in a second, or 220 million A4s of text.
According to AMS-IX, the growth is due to the fact that many connected networks have increased their capacity. Moreover, more use is being made of internet services such as video streaming and gaming now that the weather is getting worse and people have to stay at home more due to the corona measures. About 975 networks are connected to the Amsterdam hub.
The total capacity of AMS-IX has not yet been achieved. This amounted to 34.6 Tbps at the end of last year.
