Museums and tourist attractions: code red is disastrous

Museums and tourist attractions in North and South Holland are receiving cancellations from German and Belgian visitors, now that these countries advise against traveling to the provinces due to the flaring corona virus.

“Up to and including last week, 55 percent of the total number of international visitors came from Belgium and 20 percent from Germany,” said a Rijksmuseum spokesperson. The Rijksmuseum has considerably fewer visitors. “This weekend we still had 2,400 visitors a day, now there are 700 a day.”

Madame Tussauds in Amsterdam is also noticing the adjusted travel advice. Germans and Belgians are an important target group for the wax museum. ā€œWe are already seeing cancellations coming in today,ā€ said a spokeswoman. She cannot yet say how many there are. “In any case, more than usual.”

Also at Duinrell amusement park in Wassenaar, almost all Germans and Belgians who had reserved an overnight stay and visit to the park for the coming month have postponed their booking to next year. The Zaanse Schans expects a decrease in the number of visitors, as besides the Dutch, many Germans are currently coming to Zaandam. At the Euromast in Rotterdam, mainly Germans will cancel their visit on Thursday, says an employee. In recent months, together with Belgians and a few Frenchmen, they have formed the largest group of foreign visitors.

Many attractions are now fully committed to the Dutch public. At the Euromast, for example, they have various promotions, such as yoga classes on the platform.

In Amsterdam, the number of corona infections has recently increased significantly. Amsterdam-Amstelland is now the largest corona fire, followed by Rotterdam-Rijnmond. The four safety regions with the major cities are all above the signal value of the government (7 infections per 100,000 inhabitants).

Both Germany and Belgium tightened the travel advice for North and South Holland on Wednesday. From Friday even the “code red” applies to Belgians. Belgian travelers, who have spent more than two days in one of the two provinces, must then undergo mandatory testing upon their return and remain in quarantine for two weeks.

German travelers returning from North and South Holland are requested to undergo preventive testing upon arrival in Germany. You are also asked to go into quarantine for 14 days afterwards. The advice does not apply to travelers coming from other Dutch provinces.

From the Netherlands, code yellow applies in full to Belgium (observe safety risks), code orange (only necessary travel) applies to the capital Brussels. Code yellow also applies throughout Germany.
