It is almost St. Maarten, the day when thousands of children go door-to-door with lanterns for sweets. Due to the corona crisis, the municipality of Amsterdam advises to celebrate Sint Maarten at home this year. And she comes with another remarkable piece of advice: don’t give your child sweets, but Brussels sprouts.
This can be read on the site of the municipality. In it, she advises Amsterdammers to celebrate Sint Maarten in a safe way this year.
“Let your child sing songs at your own front door. Just for you. Reward that with a candy, or ‘something healthy’ of course! Brussels sprouts for example,” writes the municipality. “Just what you think is best. Because this year you have it all in your own hands.”
The Brussels sprouts advice can count on many reactions:
Game
Besides the advice to give children Brussels sprouts at the door instead of candy, Brussels sprouts can also be used in a game, the municipality reports. For example with ‘candy memory’. “You can also play this game with tomatoes, carrots, radishes or Brussels sprouts, for example,” writes the municipality. “We already said: this year you have all this in your own hands.”
The municipality has now also responded with a tweet. “The Brussels sprouts were indeed a winking advice – which unfortunately was not understood by everyone.”
