Although the EO has previously stopped co-producing The Passion, the event will continue in 2021. The gap in funding is covered by the KRO-NCRV and the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, the Nederlands Dagblad reports Friday. In the AD, KRO-NCRV director Peter Kuipers tells more about the new interpretation of the music event.
With The Passion, the Easter story is told annually in a musical with famous singers and actors taking on biblical roles. “The story should be a source of inspiration for all eighteen million Dutch people,” says Kuipers about the 2021 edition. He also says that the event will continue in any case, even if corona measures still apply by then.
According to Kuipers, the emphasis should be on a broader representation of society. When asked whether Jesus could also be played by a woman, Kuipers replies: “In theory, yes. Or by someone from the LGBT community. The difference in emphasis is that we opt for a translation to society, whereby the other is central. We do not exclude anyone at all. ”
The music event, which always takes place on Maundy Thursday, will be further expanded in 2021. On Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter, replicas of the cross cross the country. The resurrection of Jesus is also highlighted on Easter Sunday. The exact details have not yet been announced.
The Passion would take place for the tenth time this year. The city center of Roermond was chosen as the location. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, a television broadcast with a retrospective of previous editions was chosen. Where The Passion of 2021 will take place will be announced in mid-October.
