The Dutch interior designer Jan des Bouvrie has passed away at the age of 78. Des Bouvrie had been ill for a while: he suffered from prostate cancer, among other things.
Des Bouvrie was one of the leading Dutch designers and has made an important mark on Dutch interiors in recent years.
‘Lived to the last second’
The designer is known for designing the cube sofa in 1969, among other things. The sofa was included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He is also known for the use of his sleek and symmetrical designs and the use of the color white.
There is a shock to the death of the designer. Friend and entrepreneur Yves Gijrath calls him an icon. “Jan was always positive. He was someone who always thought in terms of opportunities. He lived until the last second and meant a lot to living in the Netherlands. He once said:” I have changed the living rooms of the Netherlands. ”
And that also says friend Fred van Leer. “For me, Jan was one of the greatest inspirers in my life. He has meant so much in so many areas. Interior, art, everything. Such a special man. I have held him in my heart and he will always remain there. ”
‘A professional and icon’
Van Leer calls him a craftsman and an icon. “He was a very special personality. There are very few of those. Can be counted on one hand. I think this is awful. Terribly sad.”
In 2009, the interior designer received a royal award in the field of art and design. Two courses are named after him. The Jan des Bouvrie College is part of the ROC in Amsterdam. The Jan des Bouvries Academy is a higher vocational education program of Saxion Next, a private university of applied sciences for vocational education in Deventer.
