In the past week, a total of 56,548 infections were diagnosed. On average there were 8,078 per day, compared to 5,486 the week before. On Saturday 9,164 (after correction) new infections were reported, the highest number since the end of October. On Friday, 8879 new infections were reported and on Thursday, almost 8800.
There are now 1,767 corona patients in the hospital, 44 more than Saturday. Of these, 497 are in intensive care, an increase of 16 compared to Saturday.
Deaths
The number of deaths from corona rose by 29 in the last 24 hours. That does not mean that all these people died in the last 24 hours, it may be some time between a death and registration. The RIVM reported the death of 53 corona patients on Saturday.
A total of 10,048 people are now certain that they have died from the consequences of a corona infection. The actual numbers of infections and deaths are almost certainly higher. In the first wave, not everyone was tested, in the second wave not everyone managed to make an appointment. Some people are infected without having any symptoms and therefore cannot be tested. An unknown number of people have been healed or died without ever being diagnosed with the virus.
New measures
The cabinet is currently meeting in the Cathuis to discuss possible new measures. These are expected to be announced at a press conference on Tuesday. In neighboring Germany, it has now been decided to close shops and schools from Wednesday. It is not yet clear whether the Netherlands will follow that example.
