Halsema in video message: ‘It’s a blow, but I’m counting on you’

Femke Halsema addressed herself in a video message to all Amsterdammers on Tuesday because of the lockdown. “It is a blow for entrepreneurs, employees who have to work from home longer and people who lose their work and security,” said the mayor of Amsterdam.

Femke Halsema addressed all Amsterdammers in a video message on Tuesday because of the lockdown. “It is a blow for entrepreneurs, employees who have to work from home longer and people who lose their work and security,” said the mayor of Amsterdam.

“It is also a blow for the grandfathers and grandmothers who hoped to have all family members together for Christmas”, Halsema continues.

The message comes on the first day of the lockdown. The cabinet decided on Monday to take severe measures, because the number of corona infections in the Netherlands continues to rise. All non-essential shops are closed from Tuesday, and from Wednesday also to schools.

Halsema says measures against the virus are inevitable. “The vaccines are coming and we are preparing large-scale vaccinations now, but we cannot prevent December from getting darker than we thought.”

The mayor says he hopes that Amsterdammers will drag each other through the crisis. “I am counting on you. I am thinking of you and I wish you strength and, despite everything, beautiful and loving holidays.”
