Groningen mayor writes a letter because of infections among students

Mayor Koen Schuiling of Groningen wrote a letter to students in Groningen on Monday, because of the increase in the number of infections among young people.

Mayor Koen Schuiling of Groningen wrote a letter to students in Groningen on Monday, because of the increase in the number of infections among young people.

In the letter, the mayor calls on students to better observe the corona rules, in order to prevent local measures.

“The number of infections has increased sharply in recent weeks. At least half of those infections occur among students. We have to stop that together”, Schuiling writes in the letter, which was also signed by the chairpersons of Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen. (BACK).

According to Schuiling, the infections mainly take place in the private sphere and in student houses. “Consciously or unconsciously, too many young people still come together: at home, in the Noorderplantsoen, on the city beach, in the catering industry. That’s really not possible now.”

The mayor thinks limiting the number of infections is a task for everyone, including young people and students. “Why are you in those crowded places? Why don’t you observe the 1.5 meter distance?” He writes.

Schuiling continues: “What does it mean if ignoring those few simple rules leads to a student having to stop the internship? And when we have to take stricter measures again so that you experience a study delay, you cannot go on an internship or there is even less physical education. ? ”

The mayor closes the letter by reminding the students and their friends of their responsibility.
