Bunker, mausoleum or crematorium. These are a few of the words that describe Guus Meeuwis’ new-build house. Photos of his old and new house evoke a lot of indignant reactions on Twitter. Many people find it incomprehensible that Guus had his villa demolished to replace the current house.
Guus bought a villa in Tilburg in the spring of 2018 for more than a million euros. That autumn, the demolition of his very expensive house began. The villa had no protected or monumental status and was therefore allowed to be razed to the ground. The Brabant singer’s new construction plans were also approved.
Claudia Emmens posted a photo of the new house on Twitter this morning, with a photo of the demolished villa next door for comparison. “The house that Guus Meeuwis bought here in Tilburg and what it looks like now sums up 2020”, is her judgment.
‘Crematorium’
The responses to the tweet are not tender. Many people are not satisfied with the end result. “This is incomprehensible. It is a bunker without light”, is one of the responses. “How on earth can the municipality approve of a 103-year-old building in good condition being demolished for this monstrosity,” writes another.
The new house is also repeatedly labeled ‘crematorium’. There are now about 2000 likes for the tweet and more than 650 comments, most of which are negative. The writer of the tweet adds between the reactions: “If it makes them happy, fine, but it is so out of place in the street where it is.”
EditieNL asked the management of Guus Meeuwis for a response, but they let it be known that they did not feel the need to respond.
