Corine Spier-Rottschäfer, the first Dutch woman to be named Miss World, died on Thursday morning at the age of 82, her family reports to ANP news agency.

The family has not disclosed what caused Spier’s death. The relatives do report that she was not infected with the corona virus.

Spier was named the most beautiful woman in the world in 1959, after she was previously voted Miss Holland and Miss Europe. With the prestigious prize she also won 4,000 guilders and a car with 16,000 kilometers of gasoline coupons from a gas station.

In the second half of the sixties, Spier had had enough of modeling and founded the first professional modeling agency in the Benelux with Corine’s Agency. The old model gained international fame with the company.

The establishment of the modeling agency initially met with a lot of resistance. She was even fined for allegedly breaking the job placement law. Spier challenged the fine until the Supreme Court and was upheld. The decision led to the establishment of employment agencies in the Netherlands.

In 2002 Spier retired. Since 1962 she was married to Edo Spier, architect and former Member of Parliament for D66. Together they had two children.
