Frank de Boer is the top candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Dutch national team, VI, NOS and De Telegraaf report Thursday. The North Hollander will soon have a first meeting with the KNVB.

Fifty-year-old De Boer is currently out of work, after he was fired as trainer of Atlanta United at the end of July. The former coach of Ajax said on Sunday at FOX Sports that he would find it “a great honor” to become the national coach of Orange.

The KNVB has to look for a new choice lord due to the abrupt departure of Ronald Koeman to FC Barcelona last month. His assistant Dwight Lodeweges honored the Orange squad in the Nations League duels with Poland and Italy as interim national coach.

The KNVB is said to have first polled Frank Rijkaard and Peter Bosz for the vacant position. However, Rijkaard did not want to return as a trainer and Bosz would not want to stop as coach of Bayer Leverkusen at this time.

De Boer was already an assistant at Orange

De Boer was never active as a national coach, but between 2008 and 2010 he did work for Orange as assistant to Bert van Marwijk. The 122-time international started his first job as head coach at the highest level at Ajax in December 2010.

With the team from Amsterdam, De Boer was very successful by conquering four national titles in a row. In the summer of 2016, the former defender opted to leave for Internazionale after a disappointing last season, but his period with the ‘Nerazzurri’ was disastrous. He was fired after just a few months.

In the summer of 2017, De Boer hoped to revive his trainer career at Crystal Palace, but that adventure was of an even shorter duration. After only five official games, the Premier League club decided to say goodbye to the Dutchman.

At the beginning of 2019, De Boer became trainer of Atlanta United, with which he was initially successful by winning the Campeones Cup and the US Open Cup. This summer he had to leave after a number of disappointing results.
