On Friday, the Council of Ministers decided on the proposal of Minister Kajsa Ollongren (the Interior and Kingdom Relations) to nominate Sharon Dijksma for appointment as mayor of Utrecht. The appointment will take effect on 17 December. 49-year-old Dijksma is a member of the PvdA. She is still alderman for Traffic and Transport in Amsterdam. Dijksma has been active in that position since May 2018. Before that she was, among other things, two times State Secretary. Dijksma succeeds Jan van Zanen, who was mayor of Utrecht for six years and left for The Hague earlier this year. Since his departure, Peter den Oudsten has been acting mayor.
