Last week, about 400 people probably died from the effects of corona. This is evident from the weekly mortality figures from Statistics Netherlands, which compares the number of deaths in a week with the average of the same week in previous years.
This so-called excess mortality can be attributed to Covid-19. In that week, 339 deaths from corona were reported to the RIVM. Statistics Netherlands’ mortality statistics provide a more complete picture, because not everyone is tested. Higher excess mortality The excess mortality is also higher than a week earlier, when about 350 people died more than what was normal for that week. Relatively good news also emerges from the figures. The number of deaths in nursing homes has fallen again. No more people die in the institutions than in other years.
