At the Catshuis, the cabinet discussed the developments surrounding the corona virus on Sunday with its most important advisers.
The number of positive tests was slightly lower on Sunday at 6,378 than the day before, when 6,504 people were told that they had tested positive.
However, the numbers remain dangerously high, according to the insiders, making it obvious that the number of travel movements and contacts between people should be further limited.
The cabinet had hoped that the measures taken almost two weeks ago would meanwhile lead to a leveling off in the number of daily infections. This weekend it turned out that this was not yet the case.
Prime Minister Rutte and Minister De Jonge announced more than a week ago that, among other things, the catering industry must close by 10 p.m. at the latest, the maximum number of people inside will be reduced to thirty and there may no longer be an audience at sports matches. Later, on top of that, there was an “urgent advice” to wear a face mask in public interior spaces.
Tuesday possibly more clarity
Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) reported on Saturday during the launch of the CoronaMelder app that a definite answer will be given on Tuesday about whether or not to tighten up the corona measures. He called this “inevitable” as the number of positive tests continues to rise.
Last week, the Netherlands reported one of the largest numbers of positive tests per day in Europe relative to the number of inhabitants: 161 positive tests per 100,000 inhabitants. With this, the Netherlands also passed hot spots in Brazil and the United States, which reported about 130 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
