Cabinet is considering curfews for regions with many corona infections

The cabinet is considering introducing a curfew for regions where the number of corona infections is not falling, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced during a press conference on Tuesday evening.

The cabinet is preparing a package of extra measures for the most affected regions where the contamination figures are not going down. If the numbers don’t fall, the package is deployed. A curfew, further closure of shops and closure of secondary schools, MBOs, colleges and universities are being considered.

“In the coming days and weeks we will look at which regions continue to stand out,” says Rutte. According to the prime minister, Rotterdam stands out, where many positive corona tests have been registered since the start of the second wave. Dordrecht is also mentioned.

Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) explains that the number of new infections in these cities is not decreasing. Hospitals also continue to fill up. More hospital admissions are now expected to occur than during the first wave.

“If the reproduction rate in a region does not go down, an explosion of infections is possible, we want to avoid that,” says Rutte. “If the numbers remain above average, there may be a local lockdown.” Such a total lockdown will probably last two to three weeks.
