Basic-Fit is postponing the construction of new gyms for the time being as a result of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the corona virus and the related government measures. The gym chain announced this on Monday in the trade update for the third quarter.

New gyms that are almost completed will be phased out in the coming months. The chain’s goal remains to have 1,250 gyms by 2022.

Despite the corona-related troubles in the countries where Basic-Fit is active, the number of members grew by 6 percent to 2.25 million. The number of gyms was increased to 902. Turnover did decrease, by 14 percent to 318 million euros.

At the moment 446 Basic-Fit gyms are open in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Spain. “Depending on local restrictions, opening hours are limited and / or rules apply to a maximum number of customers who can exercise at the same time,” the company said.

More than 350 gyms are now closed in France and 109 in Belgium.
