AZ started the preparatory work for a new roof on their own stadium. The club from Alkmaar reached an agreement with BAM Construction and Engineering on a cover of the stands.
Part of the roof collapsed on August 10 last year during a heavy storm. Fortunately there was no competition involved, because there were many cases victims. Research by Royal HaskoningDHV showed that it was waiting for the roof to come down. A heavy storm had seriously weakened the structure in 2006.
AZ demolished shortly after the incident, the entire roof. The club thus played months all home games at the stadium ADO Den Haag. The new roof is on all sides four meters longer toward the field, giving the stadium the fans will be more comfortable in rainy weather. The current lampposts make way for sustainable LED lighting in the eaves.
BAM carries out the work in collaboration with ASK Romein, specializing in steel construction. Work will also take place during the first half of the season. By temporary facilities may or matches are played in the stadium.
“This agreement means that the plans for the new roof will actually be realized”, says general manager Robert Eenhoorn AZ. “As a club we put this, despite the hard times in which we are together, again a step forward by our fans to provide a safe, comfortable and innovative stadium.”
BAM has extensive national and international experience in stadium construction. In the Netherlands, BAM was involved in the Johan Cruijff Arena, the PSV stadium, Euroborg, Gelredome and De Kuip. In Germany BAM include built new stadiums in Berlin, Mainz, Karlsruhe, Dresden and Stuttgart. BAM realized in Johannesburg Soccer City, which was played the final of the 2010 World Cup.
