Amsterdam bus driver assaulted by a passenger who refused a mouth mask

The man who attacked a bus driver in Amsterdam on Tuesday was denied access to the bus prior to the incident because he was not wearing a face mask. The police reported this on Wednesday about the serious assault.

The driver sustained multiple injuries, was taken to hospital by ambulance, but is now home. His condition is “reasonable under the circumstances, but of course he is very affected”, says transport company GVB.

The assault took place on Tuesday afternoon just after the driver had arrived at a stop on Ruys de Beerenbrouckstraat. A man without a mask wanted to ride, but the driver was not allowed to. This is because there is a duty to mask the mouth in public transport.

An argument arose between the two men about wearing a mouth mask. “That got so out of hand that the bus driver was bitten, kicked and beaten several times by the passenger,” police said.

Images that have appeared online show the driver being attacked while lying on the floor of his bus. According to witnesses, the suspect left on foot in the direction of Aalbersestraat. He has not been arrested yet.

“We advise this person to report,” said a police spokesman. She says that sharp pictures of the man have been made with the cameras in the bus. They first go around the Amsterdam police force to see if anyone recognizes him. At a later stage, the images can be shown on TV and the internet in consultation with the Public Prosecution Service.
