The Daily Paper clothing brand is expanding with a first permanent store outside of Amsterdam. Their New York office opens on Saturday.
The opening of the Daily Paper NYC flagship store should have happened months ago. But everything was postponed due to the corona virus. Tomorrow it will continue: the Amsterdam fashion label is crowning its success with a permanent store in New York.
The fashion label, founded eight years ago, has 180 points of sale in 29 countries. 55 people work at the head office in Amsterdam. The store in the US is the first store of its own outside the Netherlands.
Community feeling
According to the Amsterdam clothing label, the retail space in New York on the Lower East Side is more than a clothing store. The property contains a cafe and lounge area. That space should become a clubhouse for New York’s creatives, comparable to the sense of community that now hangs in the Amsterdam shop.
The Daily Paper team worked with designer Heather Faulding to create their own mark on the 1,140 square feet of retail space. The interior has become a combination of the old African culture and contemporary European design.
Graceful
Amsterdam can also be seen in the store. The striking elegant exterior is reminiscent of the architecture of the time when New York was still New Amsterdam. More modern are the facade panels of crushed drink cans, a pattern that is reminiscent of African beadwork.
One of the goals of Daily Paper’s founders is to unite communities, both in the products it makes and in the vision it conveys. The Amsterdam label combines its own creativity with collaborations, such as that with the Van Gogh Museum. The resulting collection increases the reach of the brand and the message.
Quest for identity
Hussein Suleiman (30), said earlier in Het Parool that he wants to tell a story together with his friends and fellow entrepreneurs Jefferson Osei (31) and Abderrahmane Trabsini (30). “We come from different African countries. Osei is from Ghana, Trabsini from Morocco. In school we learned about the Roman Empire, the Second World War, and German and Italian history, but nothing about Somalia, Morocco and Ghana, the colonization of Africa and the subcultures of the continent. Or what is happening there. ”
“With our clothing, the designs, the prints and the material – sometimes with sayings from artists, such as from Nigerian rappers – we want to tell the story of the search for that identity, focusing mainly on positive developments, inspiring people and strength. to give. Not everyone buys from us because of this story, a lot of people just think what we make beautiful. ”
